In English, a pool seems to refer to a puddle or a small pond in a garden.

How to Identify a Japanese-Style Pool
I learned that the meanings of Japanese and English pools are slightly different.
Something that sounds like a pool to English speakers may not be a pool in Japan.
Here’s an easy way to tell the difference.
In Japan, an artificially constructed facility for swimming is called a pool.
Dams, reservoirs, and other man-made structures store water, but swimming is prohibited there, so they’re not considered pools in Japanese terms.
The ocean is called a sea, and a river is called a river. Both are natural entities, and they can be understood as proper nouns.
Hot springs and public baths aren’t called pools either, as they’re not for swimming. Occasionally, people swim there, but mostly only elementary school students. Adults don’t swim there.
However, there are some hot spring leisure facilities where you can swim, such as heated pools and hot spring pools. In those cases, people usually wear swimsuits. In these cases, it’s considered a pool.
Look around before you swim.
In summary, a pool in Japanese is a pool for swimming, and is the same as a swimming pool in English.
